NARAYANA MAHARAJA DEFEATED BY LESS THAN NEOPHYTE DEVOTEE!

After reading Mother Jadurani's article "No Kalki Avatar In This Kali Yuga"

I would like to make a few comments. In her article she says:

Srila Narayana Maharaja mentioned a few times that in this age of Kali, Kalki avatar doesn't come. Maharaja would quote Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur, who had said that "because Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu came in this particular Kali Yuga, this Kali Yuga is called Dhanya Kali, blessed Kali." Although in other Kali Yugas Kalki does come, in this one He doesn't." On one hand I had no doubts in Srila Maharaj, but on the other hand I still could not reconcile the apparent difference in Srila Prabhupada's statement. For years I had been hearing the cassette tape of Srila Prabhupada singing "Sri Dasavatar- Stotram" by Sri Jayadeva Goswami, " Kesava! dhrta-Kalki-sarira jaya jadadisa hare." Then, in his purport to the song, Srila Prabhupada had explained that at the end of Kali Yuga there will be no preaching because people will be too degraded and sinful to understand Krsna Conscious philosophy. So Kalki comes, not to preach, but to kill all the sinners and usher in the next Satya Yuga. In a humble way I told this to Srila Maharaj and he answered, "Not in this Kali Yuga. He won't come. But if he comes, no harm; he will be raising his arms and chanting 'Hari Bol! Hari Bol!' in Mahaprabhu's sankirtan movement."

She then goes on to say that this difference between Srila Prabhupada and Narayana Maharaja was now cleared up for her after reading the following from Srila Prabhupada:

In his book Laghu-bhagavatamrta, Srila Rupa Gosvami has enumerated the following twenty-five lila-avataras: Catuh-sana, Narada, Varaha, Matsya, Yajna, Nara-Narayana, Kapila, Dattatreya, Hayasirsa (Hayagriva), Hamsa, Prsnigarbha, Rsabha, Prthu, Nrsimha, Kurma, Dhanvantari, Mohini, Vamana, Parasurama, Raghavendra, Vyasa, Balarama, Krsna, Buddha and Kalki.

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is not mentioned as a lila-avatara because He is an incarnation in disguise (channa-avatara). In this Age of Kali there are no lila-avataras, but there is an incarnation of the Lord manifested in the body of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This has been explained in Srimad-Bhagavatam.

(C.C. Madya 6.99)

She goes on as follows:

In the purport, Kalki is mentioned as the last of the twenty-five Lila Avatars. At the end of the purport, Prabhupada wrote: "Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is not mentioned as a lila avatar because he is an incarnation in disguise (channa avatar). In this age of Kali there are no lila avatars, but there is an incarnation of the Lord manifested in the body of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This has been explained in Srimad Bhagavatam."

At this point I turned to Srimad Bhagavatam, first canto chapter three. There Prabhupada had written that Kalki will come after 427,000 years. Did that mean Srila Prabhupada contradicted himself?. No, of course not. Everything is reconciled. Kalki (and all other incarnations) come in the body of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

There were many other instances where I could understand by Srila Narayana Maharaja's association that I had so little understanding of Srila Prabhupada. Srila Maharaja has been giving me a deeper understanding....Even with Srila Prabhupada's words in front of me for the last thirty-two years, being a conditioned soul, I can not understand him fully. Of course, "it takes one to know one." Only a Maha-bhagavata can understand the mood and siddhanta of another Maha-bhagavata. And only he can help the conditioned souls understand..

So now let us look at the authoritative statements of Srila Prabhupada and Srimad Bhagavatam in regards to the Kalki avatara:

athasau yuga-sandhyayamdasyu-prayesu rajasujanita visnu-yasaso

namna kalkir jagat-patih

SYNONYMS

atha--thereafter; asau--the same Lord; yuga-sandhyayam--at the conjunction of the yugas; dasyu--plunderers; prayesu--almost all; rajasu--the governing personalities; janita--will take His birth; visnu--named Visnu; yasasah--surnamed Yasa; namna--in the name of; kalkih--the incarnation of the Lord; jagat-patih--the Lord of the creation.

TRANSLATION

Thereafter, at the conjunction of two yugas, the Lord of the creation will take His birth as the Kalki incarnation and become the son of Visnu Yasa. At this time the rulers of the earth will have degenerated into plunderers.

PURPORT

Here is another foretelling of the advent of Lord Kalki, the incarnation of Godhead. He is to appear at the conjunction of the two yugas, namely at the end of Kali-yuga and the beginning of Satya-yuga. The cycle of the four yugas, namely Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali, rotates like the calendar months. The present Kali-yuga lasts 432,000 years, out of which we have passed only 5,000 years after the Battle of Kuruksetra and the end of the regime of King Pariksit. So there are 427,000 years balance yet to be finished. Therefore at the end of this period, the incarnation of Kalki will take place, as foretold in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. The name of His father, Visnu Yasa, a learned brahmana, and the village Sambhala are also mentioned. As above mentioned, all these foretellings will prove to be factual in chronological order. That is the authority of Srimad-Bhagavatam.

(S.B. 1.3.25)

The Kalki avatara will appear at the conjunction of the yugas (yuga-sandhyayam) which cannot be said as Kali yuga or Satya yuga.

Then Hiranyakasipu prayed for that "I shall not die in daytime, at night." Yes. So Hiranyakasipu was killed in the sandhya, between the junction of day and night. Just in the evening. You cannot say it is day, neither it is night.

(S.B. Lec 2.3.1-3)

Brahma said "Yes." So he was killed just in the evening, just in the junction of day and night. You cannot say it is day or night.

(Lord Varaha's Appearance Day Lecture Dasavatara-stotra Purport Los Angeles, February 18, 1970)

Lord Buddha who is also mentioned by Srila Rupa Goswami as a lila-avatara, along with Lord Kalki, also appeared on sandhya or junction.

So this is the beginning of Kali-yuga. Only we have passed five thousand years, but the duration of Kali-yuga is 432,000's of years. So only we have passed five thousand years. In this way... This is called sandhya, junction. I have already explained that junction means day and night. Day passing, night is coming, that is called junction. Morning passing, noon coming, that is another junction, meridian. So early in the morning and during sunset and in the middle, joining of noon, morning and noon, these are called tri-sandhya. Tri means three. Three kinds of junction. So everyone has got this tri-sandhya of his life. Just like in our life. When we were babies, children, that is the beginning. Say, up to fifteen years, sixteen years, that is one portion, sandhya, junction. Then another junction, youthhood; then another junction, old age. This is the nature's way. There must be three periods of anything material.
So this Kali-yuga has already begun. So in the beginning sandhya, junction, Lord Buddha's description is given already. Lord Buddha will cheat the atheist class of men.

(S.B. Lec.1.3.25 Los Angeles,Sep.30th 1972)

The following gives confirmation of the duration of the junction:

TRANSLATION: Thinking thus, the Personality of Godhead, Sri Krsna Himself, descended at Nadia early in the Age of Kali.

PURPORT: The prathama-sandhya is the beginning of the age. According to astronomical calculation, the age is divided into twelve parts. The first of these twelve divisions is known as the prathama-sandhya. The prathama-sandhya and sesa-sandhya, the last division of the preceding age, form the junction of the two ages. According to the Surya-siddhanta, the prathama-sandhya of Kali-yuga lasts 36,000 solar years. Lord Caitanya appeared in the prathama-sandhya after 4,586 solar years of Kali-yuga had passed

[Srila Prabhupada from Caitanya Caritamrta Adi Lila 3-29]

There is no contradictions in Srila Prabhupada's statements. In this age of Kali, technically speaking, there are no lila-avataras because they appear on the junctions of two ages. Therefore Narayana Maharaja's statements [personal opinion] that Lord Kalki is not coming is complete speculation and against the authority of Srimad Bhagavatam and Srila Prabhupada!!!

The whole situation has been spoiled by these so-called rascal gurus who gives his own opinion. This is our plain declaration: Let any rascal guru come. We can convince him that he is not guru, because he is speaking differently....So guru is one. Guru cannot be two. As soon as you find two opinions of guru, either both of them are rascals, or one is still at least rascal.

(Lecture: What is a Guru? London, August 22, 1973)

Here are some more statements from Srila Prabhupada about Lord Kalki's appearance: [please pay special attention to the first quote Mother Jadurani]

Therefore we should accept knowledge from such person who is beyond these four defects of conditional life. What is that? Illusion, mistake, cheating, and imperfectness. So Srimad-Bhagavatam is that proof. AS I TOLD YOU, that 2,500 years ago, or 5,000 years ago Vyasadeva wrote about Lord Buddha's appearance. Still, there is appearance of Kalki from this time, henceforward, after 400,000's of years Kalki will appear. And his name, his father's name, the place where he will appear, that is mentioned in the Bhagavata. That means tri-kala-jna. Maha-muni, he is liberated. He is incarnation of God. He knows past, present, future, and everything. That knowledge is perfect. One who knows past, present, and future perfectly, we should take knowledge from him. That is our Krsna consciousness movement, that we don't accept any knowledge from a person who is defective in so many ways. And what is the value of such knowledge? He is defective.

(S.B. Lec. 1.1.2 London August16, 1971)

So the more days go, we shall be more illusioned. So there will be no capacity to understand about God. At that time, God will come to destroy all this population by cutting their throat. That is kalki-avatara.

(B.G Lec. 2.25, Hyderabad Nov.29,1972)

Sometimes, because everyone has come here to lord it over the material nature, so there must be an ultimate situation when it becomes intolerable, and therefore Krsna has to annihilate, finish. That is kalki-avatara.

(S.B. Lec 6.3.12-15 Gorakhpur Feb 9th,1971)

The next avatara is Kalki avatara. We are awaiting, after four hundred thousands of years from this time, the Kalki avatara will come, and He'll take a sword on the horseback, just like a king, He'll simply go on killing all these non-believers, Godless creatures. There will be no more preaching. As in other incarnation there is preaching, in Kalki avatara the population of the whole world will be so much reduced to animalism that there will be no more power to understand what is God, or what is spiritualism. And it is already there, the Kali-yuga. It will increase. People will have no power to understand this philosophy, God consciousness. So at that time there is no other alternative than to kill them all, and usher in another Satya-yuga.

(Purport to Dasavatara-stotra)

So sastra means above these defects. Where there is no such defect, that is sastra. And you can understand how five thousand years ago Lord Buddha's appearance was predicted. Similarly, still there is prediction about kalki-avatara, which will take place about four lakhs and 27,000 years hereafter. Kalki-avatara's name, his father's name and where he will appear, everything is there. This is called sastra.

No Kalki Avatar in this Kali Yuga

by Srimati Jadurani devi dasi [Syamarani didi]

I first met Srila Narayana Maharaj about seven years ago, at the Rupa Sanatana Gaudiya Math, his temple near Seva Kunja in Vrndavan. Since that time I'd always strongly felt Srila Prabhupada's presence when ever I met Srila Maharaja. His answers to any of my questions seemed as brilliant and astounding as those of Srila Prabhupada, and everything he said gave me new insight into Srila Prabhupada's books. After several meetings with him, therefore, I was so overwhelmed that I asked him, "Can I understand that when you tell me something, that it is Srila Prabhupada telling me through you?" With a soft smile he answered, "if you have got that faith." And daily my faith became stronger and stronger.

One thing he said, however, I couldn't reconcile. Srila Maharaja mentioned a few times that in this age of Kali, Kalki avatar doesn't come. Maharaja would quote Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur, who had said that "because Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu came in this particular Kali Yuga, this Kali Yuga is called Dhanya Kali, blessed Kali." Although in other Kali Yugas Kalki does come, in this one He doesn't. On one hand I had no doubts in Srila Maharaj, but on the other hand I still could not reconcile the apparent difference in Srila Prabhupada's statement. For years I had been hearing the cassette tape of Srila Prabhupada singing "Sri Dasavatar-Stotram" by Sri Jayadeva Goswami, " Kesava! dhrta-Kalki-sarira jaya jadadisa hare." Then, in his purport to the song, Srila Prabhupada had explained that at the end of Kali Yuga there will be no preaching because people will be too degraded and sinful to understand Krsna Conscious philosophy.

So I let it go. I had faith in both Srila Prabhupada and Srila Maharaja. Diksa Guru and Siksa Guru are one. Srila Prabhupada is both my diksa and siksa guru and Srila Maharaja is my siksa guru. I knew that when Srila Prabhupada wanted to, he would show me how to reconcile the apparent contradiction. Later, in studying one of our Gaudiya Vaisnava songs, Ke Jabi Ke Jabi Bhai, by Srila Locan dasa Thakura, I read, "dhanya kali-yugera caitanya-avatar," that is, Sri Caitanya-Avatara is the good fortune (dhanya) of this Kali Yuga (He does not come in every Kali Yuga. He comes as the Yuga Avatara of Kali Yuga only once in a day of Lord Brahma, that is, once every 2,000 Kali Yugas.) This convinced me, but still, I had a desire to hear more from Srila Prabhupada himself, since according to my memory, I'd previously heard the opposite from him.

Then, about two months ago, on a casual reading of Caitanya Caritamrta, I found it in Madhya Lila chapter six, in the discussions between Sarvabauma Battacarya and Gopinatha Acarya. Srila Prabhupada was quoting Gopinatha Acharya, "in this age of Kali there is no lila avatar of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore He is triyuga.

That is one of His holy names." In the purport, Kalki is mentioned as the last of the twenty-five Lila Avatars.

This is confirmed in Caitanya Caritamrta (Adi Lila 4.5-16). These verses explain how, just as all incarnations come in Krsna's body when he descends, so Lord Caitanya, is also Krsna Himself, and the same applies to Him "When the complete Supreme Personality of Godhead descends, all other incarnations meet together within Him."

There were many other instances where I could understand by Srila Narayana Maharaja's association that I had so little understanding of Srila Prabhupada.

Srila Maharaja has been giving me a deeper understanding. He is always showing me the glory of Srila Prabhupada, that he is coming in the line Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur, Srila Locan dasa Thakur, Sri Krsna das Kaviraja, Srila Rupa Goswami, and ultimately Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who came to give what no other incarnation or acharya gave for a long time--since the last time Lord Caitanya came--in the previous day of Brahma.

Even with Srila Prabhupada's words in front of me for the last thirty-two years, being a conditioned soul, I can not understand him fully. Of course, "it takes one to know one." Only a Maha-bhagavata can understand the mood and siddhanta of another Maha-bhagavata. And only he can help the conditioned souls understand.
