Much of this chapter is taken from a paper I had written for my Reverse Speech training class. David Oates liked it and has posted it on his web site under the "Student Papers" section. It provides an introduction to the phenomena, but it is not exhaustive. The reader is encouraged to expand his or her understanding of Reverse Speech by visiting the Reverse Speech web site and by practicing locating their own speech reversals using the wave editing software included on this CD.
The discovery of Reverse Speech, like so many important discoveries in this world, came as an accident, or perhaps we should say, serendipity. Its discovery came about as a result of an intentional act, a marketing ploy by entertainers who led a generation with their creative endeavors—the Beatles. Perhaps as a means to turn around their failing popularity as a result of a serious faux pax, saying that they were more popular than Christ, the Beatles intentionally dubbed a soundtrack in reverse onto one of their recordings. The idea was to challenge fans to see if they could find hidden verbal messages. It worked. All over the world people were buying Beatles albums and recordings of other performers and manually rotating their turntables backwards to see if they could hear the messages. The surprise however, was that along with the messages that were intentionally placed in reverse, other messages, references to Satan, were also found—messages which seemed to confirm what some had believed all along—rock and roll music was inspired by the devil!
Messages intentionally recorded in reverse came to be known as "backward masking" and when the recording was played in reverse they were as intelligible and clear as any forward recording was. When the record was played in regular forward mode the backward masking was usually "buried" among the guitar riffs so as to be "masked," and not meant to be heard well. These messages varied among performers from straightforward communications to cryptic and mysterious messages which may have had no factual meaning.The search for backward masked messages led to the surprise findings of other intelligible sounds, and many references to Satan. The morality of people in the ‘70’s was still such that this was shocking to many people (Good thing it wasn’t discovered in the ‘90’s—it might just have been written off as "normal"). Such findings led to the thorough examination of hundreds of rock music recordings in reverse, and the findings of many references to Satan and hell. Parents became concerned that their children were being unwittingly subjected to satanic programming, ministers railed against the decadence of rock and roll music, and legislation was even introduced in California to require record publishers to warn listeners of any records which intentionally had backward sounds recorded.
While the sensation of backward masking and satanic messages was tormenting the more righteous among us, no one it seems had the curiosity of looking at the phenomena further—except for one inspired individual in Australia, David John Oates, a former insurance broker. Working at the time as a youth counselor, those in his charge had come to him with the shocking news. David, in an effort to dispel the idea, rigged a tape player to play in reverse, and found out that it was indeed true—intelligible messages were found when recording were played in reverse. He also had the initiative to see if the phenomena was limited to music, or if such messages were also present in other forms of communication.
He began to play all types of recordings backwards—speeches, conversation, arguments, infants cooing and babbling—and made what will surely come to be known as one of the most significant discoveries of all time: all human verbal communication has not just a public face, the one meant to be shown, but it also has a hidden side, one that is covert but which communicates nonetheless, additional information which is just as, or perhaps even more important than, the sounds which we consciously hear.David became very involved in the study of speech reversals and eventually labeled this form of communication "Reverse Speech," a very descriptive moniker. His study became very thorough. He documented a variety of forms and structures of reversals and categorized them, and connected the voices of the reversals with the understanding of the subconscious and collective unconscious as put forward by Carl Jung. The study became quite deep and detailed, and gradually evolved to a general theory of verbal human communication. The theory, developed over a decade of research, contributes immensely to our understanding of the communication process, and brings to humanity a new and bright horizon in communication to see and explore.
Oates’ called his general theory of verbal human communication The Theory of Reverse Speech and Speech Complimentarity and it addresses the significant features of Reverse Speech. It states that 1) Human speech has two distinctive and complementary functions and modes, and 2) these two modes of speech are dependent upon each other.The Overt, or Conscious, Mode is spoken forwards and is constructed by conscious cognitive processes. The Covert, or Unconscious, Mode, spoken simultaneously with the Overt Mode, is a reversal of forward speech sounds constructed by subconscious processes. Together they form an integral part of communication, and both modes of speech together communicate the total psyche of a person—conscious as well as unconscious.
How does Reverse Speech happen? How does the human mind construct cognitive, meaningful communication in reverse while speech goes on forward? Oates’ research has shown that speech reversals occur with greater frequency when the speaker is more emotionally charged. Formal speeches have very few reversals, perhaps one every two to three minutes. As a person speaks in a more informal and relaxed environment the reversals increase in number. And when a person is highly emotionally aroused the reversals will occur with a frequency of every 2-3 seconds.
These findings show that emotions play an important role in Reverse Speech. Emotions have been shown to be a function of the right hemisphere of the brain. Hence, Reverse Speech Theory suggests that while the left side of the brain generates the overt, forward speech, it is the right side of the brain which contributes the covert, reverse speech. The right side of the brain then must work in conjunction with the left side of the brain so that the words chosen in overt communication will create sounds which form the intelligible sounds of the covert communication. An amazing feat! This can account for a speaker’s pauses, stammerings, and fumbling over the choice of words as he speaks. The words are we choose to express our conscious mind are in part selected by the unconscious mind to communicate our unconscious thoughts.
Reverse Speech is as universal a language as forward speech—everyone speaks it, and we all hear it. However, Reverse Speech differs in many ways from normal forward speech. Thousands of hours of studying many tens of thousands of speech reversals by Oates has revealed significant variety in:It should be noted that this work has been pioneered largely by David Oates but has subsequently been confirmed by dozens of Reverse Speech investigators over the years. This report adds nothing original to Oates' work, but reports what he has learned through years of tedious research.

- the syntax of reversals,
- the tense,
- and the intended audience for the reversals.
The information content of speech reversals may be similar or it may be quite different than the information conveyed in forward speech. Speech reversals are very direct in their content and language—there is no need for politeness, the need is to communicate. Consequently reversals are direct and to the point, frequently profane, and unabashed, communicating our psyche in the most direct and explicit way. Additionally, an amazing fact is that speech reversals are never deceptive or untrue. This bears repeating. The information content of speech reversals is always the truth, and as such are a most effective "truth detector." What is heard in Reverse Speech is always the truth. When forward speech contradicts Reverse Speech this indicates that the speaker knowingly spoke a lie. This has been confirmed by thousands of reversals analyzed by dozens of investigators of Reverse Speech.The information content of Reverse Speech has been shown to be what was on the person’s mind (the conscious mind or the unconscious mind) when they spoke. This frequently, but not always, relates to or compliments what is being said in forward speech. It may also expand on, and add additional information to the conversation.
For example, listen to the reversals taken from two famous events: Neil Armstrong's stepping onto the surface of the moon, and the assassination of President Kennedy. Forward Neil Armstrong says: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." In the reversal of this statement, he adds more information about the space program saying "Man will space-walk." (this sound file requires the Real Audio plug-in). More examples of speech reversals are given below.Complementary relationships between forward and reverse speech can also appear in a number of ways. The reversals may be what has been termed "external dialogue" meaning that it is meant to be communicated to others, or may be "internal dialogue" or "self-talk" directed to one’s own self. Amazingly, single reversals may even be constructed by two or more speakers who will each construct a portion of the reversal, this has been given the label of "Link Reversal" and there are several Link Reversals presented in this analysis.
An important category for the topic at hand is that of comparative reversals, reversals which discuss events and/or emotions that are outside of the topic of the forward speech. They are not complimentary with the forward speech, but they compliment the emotional state of the speaker. Comparative Reversals will also often reveal an event or belief in a person’s life (past or present) that has similar emotions attached to it. Given that all of the dialogue analyzed in this study was recorded in the immediate vicinity of Prabhupada as he lay emaciated and close to death there was intense emotions experienced by everyone. These emotions drew out many comparative speech reversals that spoke directly to the cause of Prabhupada's circumstance—the poisoning.
When people first hear of the phenomena of Reverse Speech it seems so fantastic and beyond belief that there is a tendency to assign it to coincidence. The frequent challenge is that anyone saying a specific phrase forward will create the same speech reversals. Very brief experimentation shows this to be false, and a very notable example is found in the speech reversals on the words "Srila Prabhupada" herein. These same words said by the same person gives totally different reversals in some cases, and the same in others; just as two or more people saying the same words forwards will create very different words in reverse. This makes Reverse Speech even that much more phenomenal.There are many aspects to spoken sounds beyond the words we hear. Speech researchers have identified the various features of acoustic analysis of speech as frequency, amplitude, harmonic structure and resonance. Beyond that there are co-articulation effects, accents, and cadence. It is all of these rich features of speech which work together to produce in reverse either meaningless sounds, or meaningful words and sentences. The nature of speech is so extremely complex that creation of voice recognition systems have been one of the greatest challenges in the computer industry. The simple fact is that the subconscious mind assists in the way we produce sounds so that they will form meaningful, grammatically correct statements or words in reverse, and this action of the mind-brain connection is not something which is repeatable by others.
There are certain words whose reversals generally do sound the same for everyone who speaks them, but those words are limited to about 40 in number, and they have no presence in the reversals presented here.
Reverse Speech uses very efficient, and often not polite, words and phrases. It is not uncommon for Reverse Speech to contain explicit sexual words rather than the innuendo appropriate to socially polite conversation. More significantly however, reverse speech makes great use of metaphors to communicate efficiently and effectively. Just as we use metaphors to convey concepts and ideas in forward speech we do so in Reverse Speech. Additionally, these metaphors are used in a universal manner making Reverse Speech a unique language unto itself.David Oates’ twelve year study of many thousands of reversals have shown metaphors to be particularly significant in communicating messages from the individual’s own subconscious, and even perhaps, from the "collective unconscious" described by Carl Jung, or what Prabhupada's followers understand as the Supersoul. Unlike the conscious mind with thinks in language, the unconscious mind "thinks" in pictures and communicates those pictures as the metaphors heard in Reverse Speech. Reverse Speech metaphors are verbal descriptions of pictures that are currently being viewed on an unconscious level, and an understanding of the metaphors of Reverse Speech gives us great insight to the workings of the unconscious mind. Because of their use of communicating the emotions it is found that the metaphoric content of speech reversals increases as the conversation becomes more emotionally charged.
Several examples will demonstrate the idea of Reverse Speech more completely than any numbers of written words. In the following examples the speech reversals are repeated several times at various speeds as an aid to hearing. Click on the quoted words to hear them played.The following sound clip was taped at the time of the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. The reporter is saying that Parkland Hospital has been advised to stand by for a severe gunshot wound. Played backwards we clearly hear:
“He’s shot bad, hold it; try and look up.” (This example also requires the Real Audio plugin).
In this example the reporter is expressing in reverse what he is conscious of, namely that the president had been badly shot. “Try and look up” would likely be a reference to the direction from which he heard the shots.
An interesting example is taken from a discussion I was having with a Godbrother, Radhanath Das, of Radha-Damodar Party fame. Radhanath Prabhu is confined to a wheel chair, and in this discussion we were talking about his declining health and how he had lost his ability to walk. Forward he is speaking of his having to start using a cane while in reverse he speaks of his experience since then:
“I can recall worse health.” (Forward: “So I started walking with a cane.”)
The speech reversal is an obvious assessment as to how his physical condition has deteriorated since that time. His being confined to a wheel chair and unable to walk at all is indeed worse health than walking with a cane. The example serves to show how thoughts related to the topic of discussion show up as speech reversals, even though they may not be verbally expressed in forward speech.
Completely congruent speech reversals, in which the same exact thought is expressed in forward speech and reverse speech simultaneously, are rarely found. It is thought that only people who are very congruent in consciousness—rare people in this world—create such speech reversals. Most of us are saying one thing while thinking something else. An example of a completely congruent speech reversal is found from Srila Prabhupada and is taken from tape T47, recorded in November 1977. In this clip we hear Srila Prabhupada saying the exact same thing both forward and reverse:“Idea I will give ya.” (Forward: “I give you idea.”)
This speech reversal is a demonstration of how Reverse Speech reflects what is on a persons mind when speaking.
People will often think of things during conversation that they dare not say, but while thinking of them these thoughts are communicated by speech reversals. This next speech reversal is from Hillary Clinton. Taken from an interview in 1997 after allegations of her husbands infidelity had made the headline news, in this clip she is speaking about their time in the White House.
“Saw hell in the venue” (Forward: “We live in the White House.”)
This speech reversal offers additional information that is not present in her forward speech, a very unique feature of Reverse Speech. While her forward speech simply states that they live in the White House, her speech reversal tells us what she has experienced there and that it has been no picnic! It is fairly common for speech reversals to give additional information as in this example, and this feature of speech reversals has been significant in solving crimes where the suspect, while thinking about his crime, may never, ever speak of it in forward speech. Many of the speech reversals presented here offer additional information that would otherwise be unknown. Reverse Speech, in revealing these “hidden” thoughts, brings the information to the light of day, and exposes the criminal.
Not only do we speak in reverse, but our speaking is obviously done for the purpose of hearing. We also hear speech reversals unconsciously and this has been demonstrated using electro-encephalogram tests that show increased right-left hemisphere brain activity as a subject hears speech reversals. This would indicate that the right hemisphere of the brain has much to do with hearing, and possibly speaking in reverse.
An example of hearing in reverse is offered in the next two reversals, which form a short exchange. The example is taken from a family gathering where a lot of chatter is going on. At one point my mother states in reverse: “I-I Christian,” which for some reason obviously states her religious beliefs. Interestingly, about three minutes later I respond to her statement by saying that “I’m Vaishnava.” Obviously I obviously heard her statement and responded by with a statement of my religious beliefs.
From the truthful voice of Reverse Speech, I offer the purpose behind my research of the poisoning business. This is a speech reversal of myself found in a conversation I had with Tamal Krishna (see the rest of this conversation in the Conversation in Reverse Speech chapter, or by following this link) when I had called him to see if he would say anything on the record about the poisoning allegations. I mentioned my purpose at the beginning of the call and asked if he had anything to say. While he declined to say anything at all about the allegations we did engage in a short and polite conversation in which this speech reversal is found:
“I must serve the servant.” (Forward: “I’ve been in Den[ver for some] time”)

Well you will be pleased to know that your interpretations of the Reverse Speech found on the television interview with a very high ranking corruption suspect have paid off.
Using the information gathered by you a reporter was able to convey to the investigation team a possible location of some hidden assets of the suspect. Armed with this information and other leads the investigation team was able to identify a geographical location to investigate. They found substantial real estate property belonging to the suspect which he had earlier denied owning.

In politics, the additional information about a politician’s thoughts given by speech reversals could alter dramatically the way that politicians conduct their election campaigns and other public speaking, and perhaps the typed of people who decide to enter politics. Many people find the phenomena of Reverse Speech to be so completely amazing as to be difficult to believe. For them the "proof of the pudding is in the tasting." Once Gold Wave is installed you can use it to record your voice with a microphone. Speak of anything you like, but remember that communication that has a higher emotional content is likely to have more speech reversals. Speak for only a minute or two. After you have recorded your voice you will see a wave file, or wave form, displayed on the screen. Click on the icon which is an arrow pointing left to reverse the entire sound file. By clicking and dragging your cursor over a portion of the wave file and pressing the space bar, just that section of the wave form is played. Slowing the file may make it easier to hear reversals which are generally spoken in a faster tempo than forward speech. You can slow it down using the Effects/speed buttons on the menu.
It shouldn't take long before you find several speech reversals. Consider their content and see how they are related to your speech or what was on your mind when you were recording. In fact you may want to experiment by thinking strongly of one thing while speaking of something else. Note what it was and then listen to the reversals at that point. Have fun experimenting with Reverse Speech. Record your family and friends and listen together for speech reversals. Speech reversals are everywhere -- I've even found them on the time-date "stamp" of a friend's telephone answering machine!
After you have gained experience using Gold Wave you can open the wav files on this CD and flip them around, slow them down more, and examine them all you want. I encourage you to do so.
In this book I present hundreds of speech reversals which indicate that Srila Prabhupada was in fact given poison with the intention of killing him. These reversals are not something that I have manufactured or made up. They have been found through months of work analyzing tapes of Srila Prabhupada’s last days. To give greater credibility to this work I have published this book in multi-media format, and included in forward speech the voices where the speech reversals were found, as well as the speech reversals. Anyone with a multimedia computer and a web browser (Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is the preferred browser, and is included. Follow this link to install IE 5.0 on your PC), can open this book on their computer and use the active links to hear these reversals played in their media player, and using a wave editor reverse them back and forth to confirm my findings. I strongly encourage you to do so.
Speech reversals can be found by almost anyone, but due to the fact that Reverse Speech is factually another language, Reverse Speech analysis can only be effectively carried out by someone who has been properly trained. The analysis presented herein was done by myself after having studied Reverse Speech with David Oates in 1995-6. Investigating Reverse Speech thoroughly, I am not only convinced of it as a valid phenomena, but after hundreds of hours at the practice I have developed an expertise in understanding its language. Upon first hearing about the whispers of poisoning on the tapes I immediately thought to confirm their validity using the tool of Reverse Speech. Reversing the whispers that were posted on the VNN web site I found the poisoning was substantiated by the reversals, and at that time the controversy ended for me. I knew then that the poisoning had indeed taken place.
In my opinion it is not possible to form a valid conclusion based on just one or several speech reversals. However, a thorough analysis which shows dozens of similar reversals can reveal the truth, as it will likely be shown from several angles. I obtained the last twenty-five tapes of the conversations from the BBT Archives and began a thorough examination. The truth that I heard in reversing several of the whispers was to be confirmed over and over again throughout those tapes. As far as I am concerned, besides Srila Prabhupada's own words on the matter, these speech reversals give the strongest evidence that the crime had been perpetrated. Combined with the other circumstantial evidence and the direct testimony of Srila Prabhupada there is an ironclad case. However, even with this evidence, everyone will not agree.
As I have mentioned above, it is almost always the case that people refuse to accept information which is in contradiction to a result that they want. When things work for us we don’t want to change them, regardless of the consequences; this is our human nature. Our attachment to the way we want things to be, our illusions, is sometimes too great for us to accept the truth. Therefore, some will dismiss the whole concept of Reverse Speech because it gives testimony to something that they do not want to accept as true, and this will especially be the case for many of the disciples of Tamal Krishna Goswami and Bhakti Caru Swami. My heart goes out to these many innocent devotees. They will have a great trial with this information, and will inevitably have to deal with the stages which accompany any loss—denial, anger, grief and hopefully, resolution.
I want all readers and listeners of this account to know that my only agenda when I took up this activity was to know the truth––whatever it was. The truth shown by the hundreds of consistent speech reversals is so strong that I cannot deny it, or come to any other conclusion. We must all examine it, and deal with it. Of all devotees, the GBC body has the heaviest task in dealing with this new information as the future of Srila Prabhupada’s mission is in their hands. They may choose to support Tamal Krishna and Bhakti Caru in their protestations of innocence, or they may choose to pursue the truth as revealed by the evidence compiled herein and as shown from other sources. We pray that Srila Prabhupada will give them the courage to do the proper thing to protect his mission for the future generations of the world.
Further, I did not select reversals to paint a one-sided picture, leaving out any which showed other emotions or intentions. It is important to note that the nature of the reversals (indicative of foul play) were extremely consistent throughout the many tapes examined. To be as fair as I could I have included all of the speech reversals that I found which showed positive or conflicting emotions of the main perpetrators.
The speech reversals from the BBT tapes are presented categorically, not chronologically as this simply makes the material easier to present. For the record, I have not presented all of the reversals found in my analysis. Many reversals were either impertinent, or else were marginal in quality and therefore not used either in analysis or to draw conclusions. Most, but not all, of those selected to be included here are high quality and easiest for most listeners to hear. I did see it as important to include some speech reversals of lesser quality because of their content, with the risk that not everyone will be able to understand them.
Speech reversals are generally spoken faster than normal speech and for that reason are somewhat difficult to understand to the unpracticed ear. To aid the general listener in hearing the reversals I have used the following format. The reversals are all dynamically linked to the Wave file recordings. When you click on a reversal your media player will be opened and the Wave file loaded. By clicking on the play icon you will twice hear first the speech reversal slowed down by about 12%, then you will twice hear the speech reversal at normal speed, then you will hear the reversal flipped around and played as forward speech. These sounds may of course be played repeatedly using the media player or enclosed wave editor.
Undoubtedly, there will be those who do not hear in the reversals what I hear. To this I can state without motive that Reverse Speech activity is an to some degree an art for which one must develop an ear. I have spent more than a thousand hours listening to speech reversals. If you are willing to spend that much time training yourself you will have the experience to do a good job of it and your experienced opinion would be of some value. If you cannot hear some of the reversals keep listening, there are many others you will hear which will offer sufficient evidence to draw a conclusion, not only about Reverse Speech in general, but the culpability of the main characters in this drama.
