SRILA PRABHUPADA

Dear Prabhu's pamho. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I would just like to make a few comments on Mudhadvisa's article

Danavir Maharaja Misrepresents the Ritviks

His main points are presented in the opening paragraphs, as follows:

MUDHADVISA: Danavir Goswami has published an excellent article on Chakra which quite conclusively establishes that Srila Prabhupada desires his disciples to become qualified gurus and accept disciples. He gives a number of conclusive quotes from Srila Prabhupada on this point and also states that he and all the other disciples of Srila Prabhupada understood Prabhupada was training them to become future spiritual masters during his physically presence on the planet. ........For an honest reader of Srila Prabhupada's books it is impossible to come to any other conclusion than Srila Prabhupada desired his disciples to become qualified spiritual masters and accept disciples. This point Danavir Maharaja has made very convincingly. And no intelligent person could disagree with him on this point. Danavir Maharaja said: "By saying that Srila Prabhupada's disciples should not become gurus, the ritvik proponents spoil everything because this is the method Lord Krsna has arranged for continuing his teachings down through the ages." However the ritviks DO NOT say Srila Prabhupada's disciples can not become gurus at all. How could they say that? They simply say Srila Prabhupada established a ritvik initiation system for ISKCON and if Srila Prabhupada's disciples want to accept their own disciples they should do it in their own preaching organization outside ISKCON.

NOTE: The first point to note here is that Mudhadvisa is giving credit to a rascal. Danavir is a staunch follower of Tamul's Prabhupada killing, child molester cult. So why is Mudhadvisa giving credit to this devil for citing sastra ? According to Srila Prabhupada your life is spoiled Mr. Mudhadvisa.

Now, Canakya Pandita gives three things, formula, "If you want to be fortunate, then do these three things." What is that? Murkha yatra na pujyante: "Do not give any credit to the rascal." That is first qualification. Don't be carried away by the rascal. Murkha yatra na pujyante. If you worship a rascal, then your life is spoiled. You must worship a really learned representative of God. That is very good.

(Srimad-Bhagavatam 6.1.31 San Francisco, July 16, 1975)

In regards to Mudhadvisa's claim that he may accept disciples outside of ISKCON in his own preaching organization, he should note the following:

Sri Uddhava said: You may take lessons from the great learned sage Maitreya, who is nearby and who is worshipable for reception of transcendental knowledge. He was directly instructed by the Personality of Godhead while He was about to quit this mortal world.

PURPORT

Although one may be well versed in the transcendental science, one should be careful about the offense of maryada-vyatikrama, or impertinently surpassing a greater personality. According to scriptural injunction one should be very careful of transgressing the law of maryada-vyatikrama because by so doing one loses his duration of life, his opulence, fame and piety and the blessings of all the world. To be well versed in the transcendental science necessitates awareness of the techniques of spiritual science. Uddhava, being well aware of all these technicalities of transcendental science, advised Vidura to approach Maitreya Rsi to receive transcendental knowledge. Vidura wanted to accept Uddhava as his spiritual master, but Uddhava did not accept the post because Vidura was as old as Uddhava's father and therefore Uddhava could not accept him as his disciple, especially when Maitreya was present nearby. The rule is that in the presence of a higher personality one should not be very eager to impart instructions, even if one is competent and well versed. So Uddhava decided to send an elderly person like Vidura to Maitreya, another elderly person, but he was well versed also because he was directly instructed by the Lord while He was about to quit this mortal world. Since both Uddhava and Maitreya were directly instructed by the Lord, both had the authority to become the spiritual master of Vidura or anyone else, but Maitreya, being elderly, had the first claim to becoming the spiritual master, especially for Vidura, who was much older than Uddhava. One should not be eager to become a spiritual master cheaply for the sake of profit and fame, but should become a spiritual master only for the service of the Lord. The Lord never tolerates the impertinence of maryada-vyatikrama. One should never pass over the honor due to an elderly spiritual master in the interests of one's own personal gain and fame. Impertinence on the part of the pseudo spiritual master is very risky to progressive spiritual realization.

(S.B. 3.4.26)

Note: So if Mudhadvisa one day becomes a pure devotee [pure ass, uttama ass] in his preaching organization then he would not impertinently surpass a greater personality Srila Prabhupada who would be present nearby [everywhere] initiating everyone in the form of his original books. See articles:

Mudhadvisa would tell all the asses who had joined his organization to stop worshipping him and instead approach the real Guru Srila Prabhupada and hear from him.

In regards to the various quotes in which Srila Prabhupada says his disciples should become guru, the following article from the first printing [1993] of ALL OF US SHOULD HEAR PRABHUPADA clears this up.

"The GBC should all be the instructor gurus.
I am the initiator guru"

The GBC should all be the instructor gurus. I am the initiator guru, and you should be the instructor guru by teaching what I am teaching and doing what I am doing. This is not a title, but you must actually come to this platform. This I want.

(SPL to Madhudvisa Swami, 4th August, 1975)

Srila Prabhupada says the devotees in the G.B.C. should all become the instructor gurus. The words should reveal that at that time nobody was actually on this platform. Srila Prabhupada says "you must actually come to this platform. This I want."

There are two kinds of instructing spiritual masters. One is the liberated person fully absorbed in meditation in devotional service, and the other is he who invokes the disciple's spiritual consciousness by means of relevant instructions.

(CC Adi, 1.47 )

Here Srila Prabhupada describes the two kinds of instructor gurus. The second describes a person who gives instructions based on the revealed scriptures. The first describes the siksa guru Srila Prabhupada wants us all to become. On this platform we will be fully qualified to preach the glories of the Lord.

So this society is attempting to create a society of devotees all over the world, without any discrimination of caste, creed, colour. One must be a devotee of Krsna. Yei krsna tattva vettha sei guru haya. One must know the science of Krsna. Then he can preach to others. Sei guru haya. That is our purpose.

(N.O.D. Lec. 26th October, 1972)

Srila Prabhupada says that his society is trying to create devotees who are qualified to know the science of Krsna. Then they can preach to others.

This is complete liberated stage. In the previous verse it has been spoken, bhagavat-tattva-vijnanam mukta-sangasya jayate. The science of God, bhagavat-tattva, the science of Absolute Truth, becomes manifest to the liberated soul. We find sometimes that one man is posing to have very much advanced in spiritual understanding or a great devotee, but mukta-sanga, he's not mukta-sanga,

(S.B. Lecture, Vrndavana, 1st November, 1972.)

Again confirmation of the qualifications of the siksa guru we all have to become. Therefore even when many devotee’s have reached such an advanced platform of devotional service, [in future lifes] the position will remain.

"I AM THE INITIATOR GURU, AND YOU SHOULD BE THE INSTRUCTOR GURU BY TEACHING AND DOING WHAT I’M DOING."

"hankering after material gain,

 prestige and adoration"

Mudhadvisa and his PADA friends should take note of the following, especially point five :

When one reaches the lotus feet of Lord Krsna at Goloka Vrndavana, the watering process of hearing and reading, as also chanting of the holy name in the pure devotional stage, fructifies, and the fruits grown there in the form of love of God are tangibly tasted by the devotee, even though he is here in this material world. The ripe fruits of love of God are relished only by the devotees constantly engaged in the watering process as described above. But the working devotee must always be mindful so that the creeper which has so grown will not be cut off. Therefore he should be mindful of the following considerations:
   (1) Offense by one at the feet of a pure devotee may be likened to the mad elephant who devastates a very good garden if it enters.
   (2) One must be very careful to guard himself against such offenses at the feet of pure devotees, just as one protects a creeper by all-around fencing.
   (3) It so happens that by the watering process some weeds are also grown, and unless such weeds are uprooted, the nurturing of the main creeper, or the creeper of bhakti-yoga, may be hampered.
   (4) Actually these weeds are material enjoyment, merging of the self in the Absolute without separate individuality, and many other desires in the field of religion, economic development, sense enjoyment and emancipation.
   (5) There are many other weeds, like disobedience to the tenets of the revered scriptures, unnecessary engagements, killing animals, and
hankering after material gain, prestige and adoration.

(6) If sufficient care is not taken, then the watering process may only help to breed the weeds, stunting the healthy growth of the main creeper and resulting in no fructification of the ultimate requirement: love of God.
   (7) The devotee must therefore be very careful to uproot the different weeds in the very beginning. Only then will the healthy growth of the main creeper not be stunted.
   (8) And by so doing, the devotee is able to relish the fruit of love of God and thus live practically with Lord Krsna, even in this life, and be able to see the Lord in every step.
The highest perfection of life is to enjoy life constantly in the association of the Lord, and one who can relish this does not aspire after any temporary enjoyment of the material world via other media.

Danavir Maharaja Misrepresents the Ritviks

Danavir Goswami has published an excellent article on Chakra which quite conclusively establishes that Srila Prabhupada desires his disciples to become qualified gurus and accept disciples. He gives a number of conclusive quotes from Srila Prabhupada on this point and also states that he and all the other disciples of Srila Prabhupada understood Prabhupada was training them to become future spiritual masters during his physically presence on the planet. Madhudvisa dasa (12-28-00)

For an honest reader of Srila Prabhupada's books it is impossible to come to any other conclusion than Srila Prabhupada desired his disciples to become qualified spiritual masters and accept disciples.

Krishna Kant Prabhu, the author of "The Final Order" has argued against this point in his paper but now I think even he has agreed that Prabhupada did desire his disciples to go on and become qualified initiating gurus. To argue against this point is insanity, and no thoughtful person could accept such a crazy argument in the presence of so many clear instructions from Srila Prabhupada:

"This time I have requested all Nairobi important friends that "Now you take sannyasa and become guru. Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked everyone to become guru. amara ajnaya guru hana tara ei desa. You have come to Africa. Now become their guru and deliver them." "Now, how shall I do it?" Yare dekha tare kaha krsna upadesa: "Simply speak. Don't become very big upstart. Simply speak what Krsna has done. That's all. You become guru."(Lecture: December 20, 1975)

"To become spiritual master is not very difficult thing. You'll have to become spiritual master. You, all my disciples, everyone should become spiritual master. It is not difficult. It is difficult when you manufacture something. But if you simply present whatever you have heard from your spiritual master, it is very easy. If you want to become overintelligent, to present something, to interpret something, whatever over you have heard from spiritual master you can make some further addition, alteration, then you'll spoil whole thing. Then you'll spoil whole thing. Don't make addition or alteration. Simply present as it is. Therefore, we have begun Bhagavad-gita As It Is. Don't try to become over spiritual master. Then you'll spoil. Remain always a servant of your spiritual master and present the thing as you have heard. You'll be spiritual master. This is secret. You should know it. Don't try to become overintelligent. That will spoil. Evam parampara praptam imam rajarsayo viduh. "(Lecture: August 22, 1973)

However, Srila Prabhupada did not make any provision in the structure of ISKCON for any gurus other than himself and he has stated in his Will that there should be "no change" to any of the management principles of ISKCON. Srila Prabhupada established the GBC as his representatives to manage ISKCON on his behalf as executors of his Will. In his July 9th letter to all GBC's and Temple Presidents [which was mailed as an attachment to Prabhupada's Last and Final Will] Prabhupada confirmed the already existing ritvik initiation system would continue "henceforward."

The ISKCON society is managed by the GBC who are supposed to be executing Srila Prabhupada's Will, representing Srila Prabhupada. And the temples are managed by Temple President / Secretary / Treasurer. There is NO provision for any other gurus in Prabhupada's ISKCON. There is no place for them in the organizational structure at all. So, although Srila Prabhupada certainly instructed his disciples to go on and become gurus and accept their own disciples, HE MADE NO PROVISION FOR THEM TO DO IT IN ISKCON.

ISKCON is supposed to be Srila Prabhupada's organization run by Srila Prabhupada's disciples. Prabhupada confirmed that in his will where he indicated that the property trustees could be replaced in the future if necessary with others as long as they were Srila Prabhupada's initiated disciples. So it is obvious that Prabhupada intended to continue initiating disciples as long as ISKCON continued to exist.

However, ISKCON rejected Srila Prabhupada's July 9th order and unauthorizedly appointed 11 men as "Zonal Acaryas." Prabhupada repeatedly warned his disciples not to make this mistake... But they did it... and the result was disaster. Prabhupada would never have agreed to a system that meant eleven of his disciples forced all their godbrothers to worship them as if they were their disciples. If Prabupada's disciples refused to worship their eleven "chosen" godbrothers on the same level that they worshipped Prabhupada they were branded as offenders and driven out of ISKCON. Now practically everyone, even the devotees in ISKCON, agree that Srila Prabhupada did not appoint those 11 men as "Acaryas," however ISKCON still refuse to accept Prabhupada's July 9th order confirming the ritvik initiation system would continue "henceforward" in ISKCON.

The real situation is Prabhupada established a ritvik initiation system for ISKCON in his physical presence and he intended the ritvik system to continue in ISKCON after his physical disapearance and confirmed that in his July 9th letter. However, simultaneously Srila Prabhupada orders his disciples to go on and become gurus and accept their own disciples. It dies not appear that Prabhupada intended his disciples to initiate in his preaching organization, ISKCON, he made no provision for that. It seems Prabhupada expected his disciples who wanted to make their own disciples would start their own preaching organizations. That is the only practical way.

We have seen in ISKCON it is completely unworkable to have disciples of many different gurus in one temple. You end up with so many factions in the temple and the whole thing is completely unworkable. The disciples all want to serve their guru, but in most cases their primary authority, the Temple President, is not even a disciple of their guru. The temple president may not even like the gurus of the devotees in his temple, in almost all cases he does not accept them as his spiritual authority and often he may not even agree with them at all. So the disciples of gurus in ISKCON are put into a position where they have to serve under someone who is not a representative of their spiritual master. To make matters even worse their spiritual master is not permitted to change their service or give them any instruction conflicting with the desires of the Temple President... It is craziness... An ISKCON devotee takes initiation from a guru and the guru has no authority whatsoever over his disciples. He can not even change their service! Even if he was a pure devotee he could not do anything to help his disciples go back to Godhead as he does not even have any authority over them.

As usual from the ISKCON camp Danavir Maharaja has completely watered-down the qualifications required for a spiritual master. He claims one doesn't have to be an uttama-adhikari to be a spiritual master, and that is also true to some extent. However, Srila Prabhupada repeatedly asserts that one does have to be very careful to accept a pure devotee, an uttama-adhikari, as his spiritual master. Prabhupada repeats this message throughout all his books and classes and I am sure Danavir Maharaja has not missed this point. He is simply attempting to hide it from us in his paper. "A neophyte Vaisnava or a Vaisnava situated on the intermediate platform can also accept disciples, but such disciples must be on the same platform, and it should be understood that they cannot advance very well toward the ultimate goal of life under his insufficient guidance. THEREFORE A DISCIPLE SHOULD BE CAREFUL TO ACCEPT AN UTTAMA-ADHIKARA AS A SPIRITUAL MASTER. (Nectar Of Instruction 5) Danavir Maharaja has completely concealed the fact that Srila Prabhupada repeatedly instructs that one must accept a pure devotee as his spiritual mater. One could present thousands of quotes on this point, but then the article would be very long...

Another point that Danavir Maharaja does not seem to have realized is that Srila Prabhupada is with us now so vividly and his transcendental sound vibrations are so nicely preserved by modern technology that Srila Prabhupada is living with us now like no other Vaisnava Acarya has ever been able to do in the past. After his apparent disappearance Srila Prabhupada continues to live in his vani, his instructions, in the form of his books and his classes, his morning walks and his letters, his press conferences and his room conversations, his talks with scientists and philosophers, practically everything Srila Prabhupada said and did in his eleven years of preaching in the West is recorded and we all have access to it now thanks to modern technology... Now everyone can sit in and listen to the classes Prabhupada gave in 1966 at 26 2nd Ave. in New York, everyone can go with him on his morning walks with Dr Patel in Bombay, and everyone can sit in on his "private" room conversations with his "leading" devotees. What some have not realized is that Srila Prabhupada's personal instruction and guidance is now much more available to his devotees today that it ever was to his disciples in his physical presence. Thus Prabhupada has done something revolutionary by using modern technology to completely record his transcendental sound vibrations... This point has not been fully realized by ISKCON. Prabhupada is still living with us very vividly.

Very few of Srila Prabhupada's disciples ever had much physical association with him as he was always travelling and preaching. He never stayed in one place for very long. And, although ISKCON is so opposed to the idea of a ritvik system of initiation, Prabhupada used the ritvik system to initiate most of his disciples. Most of Prabhupada's disciples were initiated by either the Temple Prsident or a sannyasi acting as a ritvik priest on Prabhupada's behalf. Prabhupada did not even know or have any knowledge whatsoever about most of the disciples he initiated. He simply accepted them on the recommendation of his representative, the Temple President. If the temple president thought a devotee was qualified to be initiated Prabhupada would initiate him of her. There was also very little opportunity for personal one-to-one association with Prabhupada. Many of Prabhupada's disciples never saw his physical form at all, and most of them only saw him a few times when he visited their temple or when they went to India for the Mayapura Festival... Even then, most devotees would only see Prabhupada give the Bhagavatam class and mostly he did not even ask for questions! Also devotees were encouraged not to write to Srila Prabhupada as he was too busy to answer thousands of letters. As it was Prabhupada was answering up to 20 letters daily and they are almost all from the leaders. If the rank-and-file devotees also wrote to Prabhupada on a regular basis he would have had to answer 200+ letters a day, and how could he do that?

Prabhupada, in his physical presence, expanded through his representatives: the Temple Presidents, the GBC and the sannyasis. Even though there were some imperfections in some of his leading disciples, Prabhupada empowered them to train the new devotees and answer their questions and act as siksa-gurus on his behalf.

This system of ritvik initiation from Prabhupada and the GBC's, Temple Presidents and sannyasis acting as siksa gurus and representatives of Srila Prabhupada for the devotees in general is Prabhupada's system of management for ISKCON. He ordered in his Will that this system should continue "without change."

ISKCON have since claimed "Prabhupada is dead" and tried to replace him by so many "living gurus" in Prabhupada's own preaching organization. Even though Prabhupada ordered over and over again, "NO CHANGE" they have changed everything and therefore the whole organization has turned into a complete disaster. This disaster has been caused by disobeying the orders of Srila Prabhupada, we sing it every morning, yasya aprasadan na gatih kuto 'pi: "Without the mercy of the Spiritual Master there is no means of advancement from anywhere..."

The only hope for ISKCON is to reestablish the Prabhupada as the guru of ISKCON... But will they ever do it? If they do not the disintegration of ISKOCN will continue.

There is nothing to stop Danavir Maharaja or any other disciple of Srila Prabhupada from preaching and accepting disciples of his own, but he can not do that in Prabhupada's preaching organization. If he is truly a qualified spiritual master he will have no trouble setting up his own preaching organization.

Personally I took ritvik initiation from Srila Prabhupada, an uttama-adhikari spiritual master in 1989, and I feel very safe and happy at his lotus feet. The ritvik priest was Jaya Dharma Prabhu who was the Temple President in Sydney in 1977 and was giving ritvik initiations to devotees on Srila Prabhupada's behalf then. He kindly agreed to also accept me on Srila Prabhupada's behalf in 1989. Actually I did not even know the word "ritvik" then nor had I ever read Srila Prabhupada's Juyly 9th letter. I just knew Prabhupada was my guru. By Srila Prabhupada's mercy I have been able to continue serving Krishna and make some advancement in Krishna consciousness over the years. Unfortunately I have seen so many of my contemporaries take initiation from conditioned souls posing as "bona fide gurus" in ISKCON and I have seen their lives being completely destroyed over and over again. The conditioned souls posing as gurus in ISKCON could not actually give their disciples Krishna consciousness and at the same time they cut off their disciples access to Srila Prabhupada. Instead of offering obeisances to Prabhupada they offer obeisances to the conditioned soul, instead of offering the bhoga to Prabhupada they offer it to the conditioned soul, instead of reading Prabhupada's books they read the books of the conditioned soul, instead of listening to Prabhupada's classes they listen to the conditioned soul's classes... The result? They remain conditioned souls and become very frustrated and distressed and leave the Krishna consciousness movement because they have been cheated by a conditioned soul...

The most amazing statement Danavir Maharaja makes is: "Therefore the eighty or so initiating gurus within ISKCON, as well as the hundreds of siksa and vartmapradarsaka gurus within ISKCON are all qualified to be spiritual masters..." We know well that even among the "eighty or so" initiating gurus many of them can not even chant 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra daily or even strictly follow the four regulative principles... Yet Danavir Maharaja assures us they are all qualified??? "A neophyte Vaisnava or a Vaisnava situated on the intermediate platform can also accept disciples, but such disciples must be on the same platform, and it should be understood that they cannot advance very well toward the ultimate goal of life under his insufficient guidance. THEREFORE A DISCIPLE SHOULD BE CAREFUL TO ACCEPT AN UTTAMA-ADHIKARA AS A SPIRITUAL MASTER. (Nectar Of Instruction 5)

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!
