There has been much discussion amongst devotees , on what is the best course of action for the Krishna Consciousness Movement in Srila Prabhupada's physical absence. Herein is a compilation of quotes by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our initiating spiritual master, where he gives practical instruction on how to try relieve the present disorder.

SRILA PRABHUPADA

PREDICTS DISORDER

AFTER HIS DEPARTURE

AND GIVES US GUIDANCE

ON HOW TO TRY RELIEVE

THE SITUATION

Whenever an acarya comes, following the superior orders of the Supreme Personality of Godhead or His representative, he establishes the principles of religion, as enunciated in Bhagavad-gita. Religion means abiding by the orders of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Religious principles begin from the time one surrenders to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. It is the acarya's duty to spread a bona fide religious system and induce everyone to bow down before the Supreme Lord. One executes the religious principles by rendering devotional service, specifically the nine items like hearing, chanting and remembering. Unfortunately, when the acarya disappears, rogues and nondevotees take advantage and immediately begin to introduce unauthorized principles in the name of so-called svamis, yogis, philanthropists, welfare workers and so on….The acarya, the authorized representative of the Supreme Lord, establishes these principles, but when he disappears, things once again become disordered. The perfect disciples of the acarya try to relieve the situation by sincerely following the instructions of the spiritual master….Similarly, a devoted disciple of the spiritual master would rather die with the spiritual master than fail to execute the spiritual master's mission. As the Supreme Personality of Godhead comes down upon this earth to re-establish the principles of religion, so His representative, the spiritual master, also comes to re-establish religious principles. It is the duty of the disciples to take charge of the mission of the spiritual master and execute it properly. Otherwise the disciple should decide to die along with the spiritual master. In other words, to execute the will of the spiritual master, the disciple should be prepared to lay down his life and abandon all personal considerations…. When one becomes serious to follow the mission of the spiritual master, his resolution is tantamount to seeing the Supreme Personality of Godhead. As explained before, this means meeting the Supreme Personality of Godhead in the instruction of the spiritual master. This is technically called vani-seva. Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura states in his Bhagavad-gita commentary on the verse vyavasayatmika buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana (Bg. 2.41) that one should serve the words of the spiritual master. The disciple must stick to whatever the spiritual master orders. Simply by following on that line, one sees the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

(S.B.4.28.48,50,51)

WHAT IS THE MISSION?

Therefore our mission is if we can create some sadhu and they distribute themselves all over the world... As Caitanya Mahaprabhu, prthivite ache yata nagaradi grama sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama. He wants that in every village, every town of the whole world, there may be a center of Krishna consciousness so that people will take advantage of it and they will also become sadhu. This is the mission of Krishna consciousness.

(S.B.3.25.24, Bombay, 24th Nov,1974)

I am so much pleased to hear the wonderful news of your Sankirtana meetings in N.J. It is very good. This sort of enterprise is the most valuable spiritual attempt. And I thank you from the core of my heart for doing such a nice thing. Krishna will be pleased upon you, and bestow His benediction. Similarly, we want to open hundreds of centers, so that people may take up K.C.--that is our mission.

(S.P.L to Terry and associates)

This was Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission as it was predicted by Him in the Caitanya-bhagavata (Antya 4.126):

prthivite ache yata nagaradi-grama

sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu wanted the Hare Krishna movement, with installed Deities, to spread to every village and town in the world, so that everyone in the world might take advantage of this movement and become all-auspicious in spiritual life.

(S.B 7.14.30-33)

So this Krishna consciousness movement means we are trying to make people bhagyavan. If he wants, he can become bhagyavan. That is our attempt. We are creating so many centers. We are teaching how to become bhagyavan, fortunate, how to go back to home, how he can be happy. Now, if one is fortunate, they will take this instruction and turn his life. Therefore this is mission. But without becoming bhagyavan, nobody can go. So we are giving them chance to become fortunate. This is our mission.

(B.G Lecture 16.6. South Africa. 18th Oct. 1975)

So we are opening hundreds and thousands... Not thousands, we have opened about 102 centers all over the world. But we want to open thousands. But we are in need of assistance. But nobody is coming. Anyway, the Europeans, Americans, some of them have joined. Still, we required many thousands because Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission is prthivite ache yata nagaradi grama: He wants to spread this Krishna consciousness movement not in this city or that city but nagaradi grama. Just like here we have opened a center in Gandhigram. But in Bombay such hundreds and thousands centers can be opened. It is so big city. Similarly, there are other cities. It is required. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission.

(S.B Lecture 3.25-30. Bombay Nov 30th, 1974)

The Krishna consciousness movement is so nice. Everyone should take seriously, try to understand it seriously. It is authorized on the Vedic principles. It is nothing something manufactured, unauthorized. So that is our request. So we are opening centers in different parts of the world to give opportunity to the people to understand his real interest: Visnu, his real interest. That is our mission. So kindly help us and join us.

(S.B Lecture 7.5.30. London. Sep 9th, 1971)

Your enthusiasm for starting centers for educating the people of the world in this sublime Krishna Consciousness process is very good. You are actually authorized agent of my Guru Maharaja and through Him, Lord Caitanya. He predicted that in every town and village of the world His Name will be well known and you are trying for fulfilling His mission, certainly He will give you all strength and blessings. We simply have to work sincerely and automatically all other things will come.

(S.P.L to Bali Marden)

Actually, the teachings of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu that in every town and village there will be a center of Krishna Consciousness, is essential. People must co-operate. If not, then they will have to suffer.

(S.P.L. to Mr. Ashi Roy, 8th April,1975)

Regarding printing our books and literatures, I may inform you in this connection that I saw one bulletin of "Indian Railways" in which it was specifically advised that every railway servant should see to it that the wheels of the carriages or vehicles must be moving always, which means that the railway is going nicely. Similarly all of us should see that our literatures are profusely distributed. That means that our missionary work is going on nicely. Otherwise we are simply sleeping and eating. Krishna. So distribution of literature means great Sankirtana.

(S.P.L. to Karandhara Oct. 9th 1971)

For preaching, construction of temples is also necessary. The Gosvamis not only engaged in writing books but also constructed temples because both are needed for preaching work. Caitanya Mahaprabhu wanted the cult of His sankirtana movement to spread all over the world. Now that the International Society for Krishna Consciousness has taken up this task of preaching the cult of Lord Caitanya, its members should not only construct temples in every town and village of the globe but also distribute books that have already been written and further increase the number of books. Both distribution of books and construction of temples must continue side by side in parallel lines.

(C.C. Adi 7.164)

In your country hundreds of temples like this must be opened. Town to town, village to village. I am very pleased. Another temple opened, another book published, that is the success of this Movement . Without book distribution the temple worship standard will also diminish. Therefore both of them should go side by side.

(S.P.L. to Kurusrestha 28/12/76)

There is no doubt about it, to distribute books is our most important activity. The temple is a place not for eating and sleeping, but as a base from which we send out our soldiers to fight with Maya. Fight with Maya means to drop thousand and millions of books into the lap of the conditioned souls. Just like during war time the bombs are raining from the sky like anything

(S.P.L. to Ramesvara 33/8/73)

CENTERS FOR HEARING

So we should give chance to people to hear about Krishna. Therefore we are opening so many centers. Please come and hear about Krishna. Then gradually you will assimilate. Because Krishna and Krishna's words, they are not different--absolute. When we hear about Krishna, that means we are directly associating with Krishna. And the more you associate with Krishna, the more you become purified.

(S.B. Lecture 3.25.30. Bombay November 30th 1974)

So this Krishna consciousness movement is opening centers just to give you chance to hear about Krishna, only hearing. Sthane sthitah sruti-gatam tanu-van-manobhih. Simply by hearing, you become perfect. Just like Pariksit Maharaja. At the time of point of his death, he had no time to perform any yajna or any big, big thing. He simply heard Srimad-Bhagavatam carefully. Sri-visnoh sravane pariksid abhavad vaiyasakih kirtane. And he became perfect simply by hearing.

(B.G. Lecture 4.14. Bombay, April 3rd, 1974)

So we are opening different centers all over the world. At least if they come and hear about Krishna they'll become perfect, without doing anything, simply by hearing, hearing. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam. It is very easy. It is not at all difficult. Where is the difficulty? God has given us ear, and if we simply hear, listen what Krishna says, we become perfect.

(B.G. Lecture 9.4. Melbourne, April 23rd, 1976)

This temple, these ISKCON centers are open, just to give everyone the chance of hearing about Krishna so that his dirty heart may be cleansed. This is the purpose. We have no other purpose. We are not opening these centers for some material benefit. No, we want to give to the whole world the spiritual enlightenment without which they are suffering. (S.B. Lecture 1.1.1. New York, July 6th, 1972))

So this hearing... We are talking of the hearing. The hearing process is so important. All our, this institute, Krishna consciousness movement has spread because the students who have joined us, they have given aural reception, by hearing. The hearing, everything was changed within themselves and they have joined with full, whole-heartedness, and the... Going on. So hearing is so important. We are opening so many centers just to give people chance of hearing about the transcendental message. So you take chance, you take, I mean to say, the advantage of this hearing process.

(B.G. Lecture 7.1 San Diego July 1, 1972)

So the beginning is hearing. We are opening so many centers just to give people chance to hear about Krishna. That's all. If you simply hear about Krishna, srnvatam, then Krishna becomes pleased: "Oh, now he's hearing about Me."

(B.G. Lecture 7.8 Bombay Feb. 23,1974)

HEAR FROM WHOM?

You just associate with the person bhagavata who is realized soul and hear from him this the same book, the same knowledge. Krishna's representative. Just like Krishna says, tat samasena me srnu. Me srnu: "Hear from Me or My representative. Then you will benefit."So these centers are being opened just to give the opportunity to the people who are suffering not only in this life, life after life."

(B.G. Lecture, 1975)

Pious activities means to cleanse the heart. Because our heart is overloaded with so many sinful activities, therefore we are suffering. So by hearing, satam prasangat, by hearing from the realized soul, by hearing the Bhagavad-gita, Bhagavata, as it is, your heart will be cleansed.

srnvatam sva-kathah Krishnah

punya-sravana-kirtanah

hrdy antah-stho hy abhadrani...

Abhadrani means rajo-guna, tamo-guna. Even sattva-guna is also mixed with rajo-guna, tamo-guna. But if you hear about Krishna... We are opening all over the world hundreds of centers. Why? We are giving chance to the people to hear about Krishna

(S.B. 1.2.6. Calcutta. Feb 26th, 1974)

Especially in this age, sravanam, or hearing, is very, very important. We are therefore opening different centers in different parts of the world, and they are being given the chance of this bhakti-yoga system, sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam, like that. So all these devotees present here, they are not Indians. I have not brought them from India; neither I have bribed them here. But by hearing only, they are now coming to God consciousness and devotees. Therefore this sravanam item, or hearing item, is very, very important. So if you all, ladies and gentlemen present here, take advantage of hearing about God from this institution, you will also become God conscious. We have got many sense organs, out of which the aural sense, or the hearing sense, is very important. Therefore, for spiritual understanding, we have to use this ear. So therefore the Vedic literature is called sruti. Sruti means to receive the knowledge by hearing. So our process, or the Vedic process, is that... Satam prasangan mama virya-samvido bhavanti hrt-karna-rasayanah kathah. If one lends his aural reception of spiritual knowledge through the authorized person, devotee, then he relishes taste in spiritual life…Namanta eva means submissively offering respect, obeisances. And after that, if you hear from the self-realized soul, jnane prayasam udapasya namanta eva san-mukharitam. San-mukharitam means self-realized soul. From his mouth one has to hear.

(Initiation lecture. Caracas. Feb 22nd, 1975)

Prabhupada: Yes. "Hear from Me." And hearing from whom? From a loafer? No. From Krishna or Krishna's representative. That will effect. Hearing, there must be hearing process also from the authorized person. Just like if you take electricity. You should take electricity where the electric point is there. Electric is everywhere; that's nice. Everyone accepts there is electricity. But you have to take electricity from the plug where the electricity current is going on. Then you get electricity. Therefore sravanam, hearing, from whom? From Krishna or His representative. Then it is perfect.

(B.G. Lecture 7.1 Los Angeles 12 March 1970)

All of you know that unless one has attended class of the professor seventy-five percent, he is not allowed for the examination. So hearing is so important. And that is also in the case of spiritual. You hear from.... Hear from whom? Hear from whom? That tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet: "Hear from guru."

(B.G.Lecture 4.23 Bombay April 12 1974)

It is explained in the previous verse that one has to hear glorification of the Lord from the mouth of a pure devotee. This is further explained here. The transcendental vibration from the mouth of a pure devotee is so powerful that it can revive the living entity's memory of his eternal relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead….. For a conditioned soul, therefore, it is very important to hear from the mouth of a pure devotee, who is fully surrendered to the lotus feet of the Lord without any material desire, speculative knowledge or contamination of the modes of material nature.

(S.B. 4.25.20)

The Lord can be realized through the aural reception of the transcendental message, and that is the only way to experience the transcendental subject. As fire is kindled from wood by another fire, the divine consciousness of man can similarly be kindled by another divine grace. His Divine Grace the spiritual master can kindle the spiritual fire from the woodlike living entity by imparting proper spiritual messages injected through the receptive ear. Therefore one is required to approach the proper spiritual master with receptive ears only, and thus divine existence is gradually realized.

(S.B. 1.2.32)

Manu said that since he was advised and instructed by Kardama Muni, he was very much favored. He considered himself lucky to receive the message by aural reception. It is especially mentioned here that one should be very inquisitive to hear with open ears from the authorized source of the bona fide spiritual master. How is one to receive? One should receive the transcendental message by aural reception. The word karna-randhraih means "through the holes of the ears." The favor of the spiritual master is not received through any other part of the body but the ears.

(S.B. 3.22.7)

One has to understand Srimad-Bhagavatam through the process of devotional service and by hearing the recitation of a pure devotee. These are the injunctions of Vedic literature-sruti and smrti.

(C.C.Madya Lila 22.131)

One must be very meek and submissive and try to live peacefully by lending the ear to the speeches of the transcendentally self-realized soul who speaks on the message of Bhagavata-dharma, or the religion of glorifying the Supreme Lord and His devotees.

(S.B. Intro.)

This statement is also confirmed in the Third Canto, Twenty-fifth Chapter, verse 25, of Srimad-Bhagavatam, where Lord Kapila says, "My dear mother, when a person is actually in association with pure devotees, the sublime potency of My devotional service can be experienced." In other words, when a pure devotee speaks, his words act upon the hearts of the audience. What is the secret of hearing and chanting? A professional speaker cannot impress transcendental ecstasy within the hearts of the listeners. However, when a realized soul who is engaged in the service of the Lord is speaking, he has the potency to inject spiritual life within the audience. One should, therefore, seek the association of such pure, unalloyed devotees, and by such association and service a neophyte devotee will certainly develop attachment, love and devotion for the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

(N.O.D Chapter 17)

….. we must admit that we have realized definitely that the divine message from his holy lips is the congenial thing for suffering humanity. All of us should hear him patiently. If we listen to the transcendental sound without unnecessary opposition, he will surely have mercy upon us. The Acarya's Message is to take us back to our original home, back to God. Let me repeat, therefore, that we should hear him patiently, follow him in the measure of our conviction, and bow down at his lotus feet for releasing us from our present causeless unwillingness for serving the Absolute and all souls.

(Srila Prabhupada's Vyasa Puja offering, 1936)

THE PERFECT DISCIPLES OF THE ACARYA TRY TO RELIEVE THE SITUATION

The acarya, the authorized representative of the Supreme Lord, establishes these principles, but when he disappears, things once again become disordered. The perfect disciples of the acarya try to relieve the situation by sincerely following the instructions of the spiritual master.

(S.B.4.28.48)

HOW DO WE BECOME PERFECT ?

There are nine different processes of bhakti-yoga. Any one of them you adopt, you become perfect, not that you have to adopt nine. If you can, it is very nice. So nine, eight, seven, six, five--if you adopt only one, you become... You don't anything. Simply hear Srimad-Bhagavatam from a realized soul, you will become perfect.

(S.B. Leech. 2.9.4 Japan April 22nd,1972)

The process of hearing from a pure devotee is recommended in all Vedic scriptures, especially by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. One may stay in his position of life--it does not matter what it is--but if one hears from the mouth of a pure devotee, he gradually comes to the understanding of his relationship with the Lord and thus engages in His loving service, and his life becomes completely perfect. Therefore, this process of hearing from the mouth of a pure devotee is very important for making progress in the line of spiritual understanding.

(S.B.4.20.25)

Prabhupada: Yes. That is real preacher. That is explained in the Vedic literature, sravanam kirtanam. First of all he becomes perfect by hearing. This is called sravanam. And when he is perfectly situated in spiritual life by hearing perfectly from the perfectly authorized person, then his next stage begins, kirtanam. That is preaching. That sravanam kirtanam, everyone is hearing in this material world. Everyone is hearing. Even this material educationist, he also hears from the material person, professor. That hearing is there. Then he acts when he is grown-up, passed his examination, sometimes acts as professor. The same process: if one hears from the perfect spiritualized person, he becomes perfect, then he becomes actual preacher.

(Philosophical discussions- Origen)

Prabhupada: So any, anything, whatever you may be, you cannot become perfect without hearing from another perfect. This is nonsense, that you go on speculating and the proof will come. This is nonsense.

(Philosophical discussions- Edmund Husserl)

Krishna has given us ears to hear and a tongue to speak. We can hear from a realized soul and thus perfect our lives.

(T.L.K.)

Just like Maharaja Pariksit, he engaged himself simply for hearing. He become perfect. Simply by hearing Bhagavata from Sukadeva Gosvami.

(B.G. Leech. 4.9 Bombay, March 29,1974)

Sravanam is the first important part. That is the... If one simply hears, simply by hearing sincerely, seriously, he becomes perfect. It is so nice. If simply people come here and simply hear Bhagavad-gita and try to understand it, he becomes perfect. But they will not come. As soon as they will hear, "Oh, Swamiji is preaching that I am not God. God is different," "Oh, don't come here." Finish. I have to flatter him that "You are God." Then he will come. His hearing is disturbed because there is no flattering words. But if he sticks to hearing only, he becomes perfect. But maya will not allow him to hear: "Oh, please vacate out. Don't come here." Even our students. They remain here for some time, go away. Maya dictates, "Oh, why you are spoiling your time?" But the process is very simple, hearing. But maya will not allow him to accept this simple process.

So one has to become very strong. Mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te. One who determines, "Yes, I will hear of Krishna, nothing," then maya cannot do anything. Man has defeated. If simply one decides that "I simply hearing..., simply I will hear of Krishna and nothing more," then he defeats the maya, simply by determination, that's all.

(B.G.Lec. 7.1 Los Angeles March 12, 1970)

So hearing is so important. Just like even in your ordinary education you go to the school, college, and hear from your professor. Hearing is so important. Then you become perfect.

(B.G. Leech. 9.4 Melbourne April 23th,1976)

You can remain what you are, but if you simply hear... God has given you the power of hearing. If you hear from authoritative sources, then you become perfect, simply by hearing. Therefore the first principle, hearing, is recommended, sravanam.

(B.G. Lec.9.15 New York Dec. 1, 1966)

This is the remedy suggested in this age. You cannot practice anything. You cannot practice sacrifice. You cannot practice speculation. You cannot practice yoga, nothing. You can simply practice this: submissively hear from authoritative sources, try to assimilate it, and become perfect.

(B.G. Lec.9.15 New York Dec. 1, 1966)

Our real point is that Sukadeva Gosvami was not a grammarian, but he learned everything from his father by hearing. Therefore it is called sruyamanayam. If you hear from the right person, properly, then you become perfect. There is no need of literary education.

(S.B. Lec. 1.7.8. Vrndavana Sep. 7,1976)

If we simply stick to these principles of kevala bhakti, even simply by hearing, sravanam... Just like we are holding class everwhere, in every center. If somebody simply hears attentively, he'll be perfect. This is bhakti, simply hearing.

(S.B. Lec.6.1.15 Honolulu May 15,1976)

SIMPLY THEY HEAR

AND THEY BECOME BIG, BIG PREACHER

It does not require that he is very learned scholar. No. Simply he must hear from the authority. Srotriyam. You have... Krishna has given you, God has given you the ear. This is our system. Simply they hear and they become big, big preacher. It doesn't require that he has to pass M.A., C.B.A.C., or Ph.D. examinations. Hearing is sufficient.

(S.B. Lecture 3.254. Bombay, Nov 4th, 1974)

After receiving the spiritual master's mercy, one must repeat his instructions, and this is called sravana-kirtana--hearing and chanting. One who has not properly heard from the spiritual master or who does not follow the regulative principles is not fit for chanting (kirtana). This is explained in Bhagavad Gita (2.41): vyavasayatmika buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana. One who has not listened carefully to the instructions of the spiritual master is unfit to chant or preach the cult of devotional service.

(C.C. Mad. 19.152)

This is the way of the parampara system. Although Sanat-kumara, the well-known great saintly Kumara, was in the perfect stage of life, still he heard the message of Srimad-Bhagavatam from Lord Sankarsana. Similarly, when he was questioned by Sankhyayana Rsi, he spoke to him the same message he had heard from Lord Sankarsana. In other words, unless one hears from the proper authority one cannot become a preacher. In devotional service, therefore, two items out of the nine, namely hearing and chanting, are most important. Without hearing nicely, one cannot preach the message of Vedic knowledge.

(S.B. 3.8.8)

TRANSLATION. In spite of my inability, whatever I have been able to hear [from the spiritual master] and whatever I could assimilate I am now describing in glorification of the Lord by pure speech, for otherwise my power of speaking would remain unchaste.

PURPORT....Maitreya's statement is that in order to avoid unchaste conscious activities, he was trying to describe the unlimited glories of the Lord, although he did not have the ability to describe them perfectly. This glorification of the Lord is not a product of research, but the result of hearing submissively from the authority of the spiritual master. It is also not possible to repeat all that one has heard from his spiritual master, bu one can narrate as far as possible by one's honest endeavour. It does not matter whether the Lord's glories are fully explained or not.

(S.B. 3.6.36)

He does not have to be a very learned scholar, but he must have heard from the proper authority. God gives us the ears to hear, and simply by hearing we may become great preachers. We don't need Ph.D.'s or academic examinations.

(T.L.K)

So therefore sravanam, hearing, is so important. So in the devotional service the first step is hearing, hearing submissively from the authoritative source and just to assimilate it and grasp it with our body, mind and intelligence. In this way you shall be able to conquer the unconquerable. And when you are able to do such, then you can make kirtana, kirtana.

(B.G. Leech., 9.15 1st December, 1966)

One who has perfectly heard from the perfect source becomes convinced about the all-pervading Personality of Godhead and thus becomes enthusiastic in glorifying the Lord.

(S.B.2.2.36)

This yoga practice begins simply by hearing. You have got these ears. You simply just lend your ears and you become yogi. And as soon as you become experienced in hearing, you become a preacher--kirtanam. Immediately. One who has heard nicely, he will try to become a kirtaniya, or preacher. That is natural. That is natural.

(B.G. Lecture, Los Angeles, 21st March, 1970)

To hear and explain them is more important than reading them. One can assimilate the knowledge of the revealed scriptures only by hearing and explaining. Hearing is called sravana, and explaining is called kirtana. The two processes of sravana and kirtana are of primary importance to progressive spiritual life. Only one who has properly grasped the transcendental knowledge from the right source by submissive hearing can properly explain the subject.

(S.B. 1.1.6)

Kirtanam means chanting. Kirtanam actually means describing. You can describe with music. You can describe with words. You can describe in speeches. Any sort of describing, that is called kirtana. And sravanam. Unless you hear, you cannot describe. What you shall describe? If you do not know anything about the Supreme Lord, then how can you describe? Therefore hearing is the first item, sravanam.

(B.G. Leech., 9.15 1st December, 1966)

So this Krishna consciousness movement is to give chance to everyone to hear about Krishna. This is the first process, sravanam. And when one has heard very nicely about Krishna, they can.., then he can speak about Krishna. And he must speak. You cannot remain without speaking. That is the result of sravanam. Sravanam kirtanam. One who has heard nicely, he must speak or preach.

(B.G. Lecture 4.12, 1st April, 1974)

So he marked it that "This boy is interested to hear me." So hearing is very important. Hearing. Just like Arjuna heard from Krishna. Come on. (People entering) (Break) ...because I was serious for hearing, and therefore now I am serious about kirtanam, means speaking, or preaching. Do you follow what I say? Yes. So one who is serious about hearing, he can become a future nice preacher. Sravanam kirtanam. Next stage is developed. That is development. If one has actually heard nicely, then he will speak nicely.

(S.P.C. Columbus 10th May, 1969)

EVERYONE COMING TOGETHER

SHOULD MERGE IN PRABHUPADA'S MESSAGE

AND PREACH IT TO THE WORLD.

THEN HIS SERVICE WILL BE IN PROPER ORDER.

second vasistya

22. What is your order also, that everyone, coming together, should merge in your message and preach it to the world.

23. If everyone just initiates then there will only be a contradictory result. As long as this goes on, there will only be failure.

24. Now even, my godbrothers, you return here to the order of our master, and together we engage in his puja.

25. But simply a festival of flowers and fruits does not constitute worship. The one who serves the message of the guru really worships him.

26. The service of the message is the real meaning of the Vedas. Don't be proud, brothers, come back to this.

27. Kalidas Nag (a learned man who was defeated by Srila Saraswati Thakura and later became his disciple), that master said in public forum one day.

28.That Kali's mission was to kill the entire world while the essential meaning of Lord Caitanya's message was kept locked up in a cage.

29. O shame! My dear brothers, aren't you embarassed? In the manner of businessmen you increase your disciples.

30. Our master said to preach. Let the neophytes stay in the temples and ring the bells.

Third Vasistya

32. But just take a look at the terrible situation that has arisen. Everyone has become a sense enjoyer and has given up preaching.

33. In the temples they have also begun to lock the doors. Preach this bhagavata dharma, don't hesitate.

34. Within this world is another world, Whose sound is the unequaled penetrating force.

36. From the seas, across the earth, penetrate the universal shell, come together and preach this Krishna consciousness.

37. Then our master's service will be in proper order. Make your promise today. Give up all your politics and diplomacy.

39. You have become renouncers, brothers, so renounce everything. But if you also renounce the order of the spiritual master, then what kind of renunciation is that?

40. The one who renounces the guru’s order (guru tyagi) and the one who tries to enjoy the assets of his spiritual master (guru-bhoghi) are two kinds of useless persons. First become a servant of your spiritual master (guru-sevi) and then you will understand things clearly.

Fourth Vasistya

44. The Supreme Lord says that everything is Mine. Don't protest. Just unite and preach.

45. Srila Prabhupada gave this final message himself. Take care to follow that completely in all respects.

  1. So what is the difficulty for all of us to come together in this way and why do all these things even have to be said to you?

Fifth Vasistya

49. When will that day come when there will be a temple established in every house in every corner of the world?

50. When the big court judge will be a Gaudiya Vaishnava with tilak beautifully decorating his forehead.

51. A Vaishnava winning votes will be elected president of the land and preaching will be spread everywhere.

60. Everyone has become a witch by the influence of this age. Everyone is unhappy due to the absence of the mercy of the Vaisnavas.

61. The Vaisnavas are famous as "para dukha dukhi." This fame will increase as the preaching increases.(N.B. "Ebe yasa ghusuk tribuvana")

62. If eternally pure devotional service to Krishna is awakened in everyone, then Kali will flee, screaming of his own accord.

63. "Praninan upakaraya" do work for the benefit of all living beings. This is Mahaprabhu's teachings. This is the storehouse of happiness in this life and the next.

64. So much work has fallen into your hands, so gather together and do it.

69. The mercy of the Vaisnavas is scientific and authorized, without their mercy this world is simply insurmountable maya.

75. All immersed in bliss, singing the glories of the Hari. The hearts of Vaisnavas dance in ecstasy to see this.

76. The entire world is filled with the use of material objects, without a trace of devotion to the Lord.

77. Still they are searching after peace. Preach Krishna consciousness; fulfill their desires.

Today my brothers, get to this task. Save the battered souls by your preaching.

( Extracts from the Phalgun Krishna Pancami – an offering of prayers by Srila Prabhupada to Srila 108 Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur, Vrindavana, India, 1961)

DON'T GIVE UP PUSHING ON THIS MOVEMENT

So this Krishna consciousness movement is authorized, very important. Now, you American boys and girls who have taken to this movement, please take it more seriously and... That is the mission of Lord Caitanya and my Guru Maharaja, and we are also trying to execute the will by disciplic succession. You have come forward to help me. I shall request you all that I shall go away, but you shall live. Don't give up pushing on this movement, and you'll be blessed by Lord Caitanya and His Divine Grace Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Prabhupada.

( His Divine Grace Srila Bhakisiddanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada's Disappearance Day,Lecture Los Angeles,December 9,1969 )

The devotees of Lord Caitanya must preach Krishna consciousness in every village and town in the world. That will satisfy the Lord. It is not that one should act whimsically for his own personal satisfaction. This order comes down through the parampara system, and the spiritual master presents these orders to the disciple so that he can spread the message of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. It is the duty of every disciple to carry out the order of the bona fide spiritual master and spread Lord Caitanya's message all over the world."

(C.C.Mad lila 16.64)

THERE ARE MANY CANDIDATES WHO ARE AWAITING THIS MESSAGE

Lord Caitanya said that every village and town on the surface of the world will know the message of the Sankirtana movement. This very statement affirms that in every village and town all over the world there are many candidates who are awaiting this message.

(S.P.L to Sudama, Los Angeles, 17th Feb,1970)

PREACH THE SANKIRTANA MOVEMENT

WITHOUT RESTRICTION

It is another ambition of the spiritual master to see his disciples not only chant, dance and follow the regulative principles but also preach the sankirtana movement to others in order to deliver them, for the Krishna consciousness movement is based on the principle that one should become as perfect as possible in devotional service oneself and also preach the cult for others' benefit.

(C.C. Adi lila 7.92)

TRANSLATION Not considering who asked for it and who did not, nor who was fit and who unfit to receive it, Caitanya Mahaprabhu distributed the fruit of devotional service

PURPORT This is the sum and substance of Lord Caitanya's sankirtana movement. There is no distinction made between those who are fit and those who are not fit to hear or take part in the sankirtana movement. It should therefore be preached without discrimination. The only purpose of the preachers of the sankirtana movement must be to go on preaching without restriction. That is the way in which Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu introduced this sankirtana movement to the world.

(C.C. Adi Lila 9.29)

Srila Prabhupada's instruction on how to relieve the present disorder is to continue pushing the movement on, by opening preaching centers that give facility to others to take his shelter and directly hear from him. By regularly hearing from Srila Prabhupada, one gradually comes under the shelter of his lotus feet. Under the protection of Srila Prabhupada and the previous acaryas we become their instruments, so we may be able to do something for the benefit of suffering humanity. This is the example given by Srila Prabhupada and the path he gave us to follow.

You are right that politics should be avoided. In my personal life I did not participate in the political diplomacy of my Godbrothers. I was simply thinking how to fulfil the order of my Guru Maharaja.

(S.P Letter to Gangamayi devi dasi, 18/10/74)

Despite the spiritual master's order to form a governing body and execute the missionary activities of the Gaudiya Matha, the two unauthorized factions began litigation that is still going on after forty years with no decision. Therefore, we do not belong to any faction. But because the two parties, busy dividing the material assets of the Gaudiya Matha institution, stopped the preaching work, we took up the mission of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura and Bhaktivinoda Thakura to preach the cult of Caitanya Mahaprabhu all over the world, under the protection of all the predecessor acaryas, and we find that our humble attempt has been successful.

(C.C Adi 12.8)

Why is there this politics? This is not good. If politics come, then the preaching will be stopped. That is the difficulty. As soon as politics come, everything is spoiled. In the Gaudiya Math the politics is still going on. My Guru Maharaja left in 1936, and now it is 1976, so after 40 years the litigation is still going on. Do not come to this.

(S.P Letter to Gurukrpa swami, 30/9/75)

A person who cannot keep his faith in the words of his spiritual master but acts independently never receives the authority to chant the holy name of the Lord. It is said in the Vedas (Svetasvatara Upanisad 6.23):

yasya deve para bhaktir

yatha deve tatha gurau

tasyaite kathita hy arthah

prakasante mahatmanah

"Only unto those great souls who have implicit faith in both the Lord and the spiritual master are all the imports of Vedic knowledge automatically revealed." This Vedic injunction is very important, and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu supported it by His personal behavior. Believing in the words of His spiritual master, He introduced the sankirtana movement, just as the present Krishna consciousness movement was started with belief in the words of our spiritual master. He wanted to preach, we believed in his words and tried somehow or other to fulfill them, and now this movement has become successful all over the world. Therefore faith in the words of the spiritual master and in the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the secret of success. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu never disobeyed the orders of His spiritual master and stopped propagating the sankirtana movement. Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami, at the time of his passing away, ordered all his disciples to work conjointly to preach the mission of Caitanya Mahaprabhu all over the world. Later, however, some self-interested, foolish disciples disobeyed his orders. Each one of them wanted to become head of the mission, and they fought in the courts, neglecting the order of the spiritual master, and the entire mission was defeated. We are not proud of this; however, the truth must be explained. We believed in the words of our spiritual master and started in a humble way--in a helpless way--but due to the spiritual force of the order of the supreme authority, this movement has become successful.

(C.C Adi Lila 7.95-96)

THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN STOP

THE SANKIRTANA MOVEMENT

You have asked about whether nuclear devastation on this planet would effect the Sankirtana Movement. No, there is nothing that can stop the Sankirtana Movement because it is the will of God Himself, Lord Caitanya, that His Holy Name be heard in every town and village.

(S.P.L to Makhanlal, Mayapur, 22nd June, 1973)

It cannot be checked. There may be so many hindrances. But one who is pure devotee, his business cannot be stopped.

(S.B. 1.2.6. Calcutta. Feb 26th, 1974)

Similarly, anyone who is ordered by the Lord to perform some action in this material world, especially preaching His glories, cannot be counteracted by anyone; the will of the Lord is executed under all circumstances.

(S.B. 3.16.36)

Similarly, since the sankirtana movement was first set in motion five hundred years ago by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's desire that it spread all over the universe, the Krishna consciousness movement, in continuity of that same motion, is now spreading all over the world, and in this way it will gradually spread all over the universe. With the spread of the Krishna consciousness movement, everyone will merge in an ocean of love of Krishna.

(C.C. Adi 13.32)

Although jealous persons may be envious, if we stick to our principles and follow in the footsteps of the Panca-tattva, this movement will go on unchecked by imitation svamis, sannyasis, religionists, philosophers or scientists, for it is transcendental to all material considerations. Therefore those who propagate the Krishna consciousness movement should not be afraid of such rascals and fools.

(C.C. Adi 7.24)

If you all keep to the standard practices of pure spiritual life as I have humbly instructed you, there is no doubt that this Sankirtana Movement of Lord Caitanya will overtake all the earth and all opposing parties will be cracked down to nothing.

(S.P.Letter to Karandhara, Jan 1st, 1971)

If you can succeed in spreading this movement to every town and village throughout the world that will be your great credit. Kindly do this and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu will be pleased and my Guru Maharaja will be pleased and I, as their humble servant, will also be pleased. That is our main goal in life, our svartha gatim.

(S.P.L to Ramesvara, Vrindavana 18th Sept, 1976)

Ultimately no amount of disorder caused by rougues and nondevotees can counteract Srila Prabhupada and His business in this material world. Nothing can stop the sankirtana movement as it is the will of God Himself, Lord Caitanya. It will gradually spread all over the universe and everyone will merge in an ocean of love of Krishna. Therefore let us all try to play a small part in this great mission by becoming an instrument in the hands of our spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada by spreading his movement in every town and village throughout the world. That will be to Srila Prabhupada's great credit and will please Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

PRABHUPADA SANKIRTANA SOCIETY

The devotees at the Prabhupada Sankirtana Society in a humble and helpless way, are trying to keep pushing on the sankirtana movement keeping Srila Prabhupada in the center as the acarya. We presently have three centers in which lectures are given daily by Srila Prabhupada, during the morning and evening programmes. Kirtana's are regularly led by His Divine Grace and his bhajana's can be heard twenty four hours a day in most centers. Regular sankirtana, book distribution and prasadam distribution is going on in the society. We would like to assist and cooperate with all devotees who accept Srila Prabhupada as the initiating spiritual master, to push on the sankirtana movement.
